My mom and I were close. She taught me to control my demonic side. She said that our connection would keep me strong. Now I have this connection to keep me strong.
— Chuy to the Midnighters

Chuy Strong was a half-demon in Midnight, Texas. He lived with his husband for centuries and admonished him, due to his fear of others finding out what he is, especially when he reveals his wings. They also had a pet dog named Rasta.

After finding out that Joe had an affair with Walker Chisum, he lost control of his demonic side and Joe was forced to kill him.

Backstory[]

Ultimately, the vast majority of Chuy's past remains unknown. However, Chuy was born as a half-demon from a union between his human mother and demonic father; a union that he states wasn't out of love, implying that his father took advantage of his mother. Eventually, she taught him how to control his demonic side and that her connection with him was what kept him strong enough to maintain control and remain human.

Circa 9th to 10th century,[1] Chuy met Joseph at a market, haggling with Silk Road traders for porcelain. Joe came to his rescue when those traders attacked and stole his sandals. Showing kindness and mercy against his attackers, and proving that a half-demon can be "good", he and Joe have been together ever since. At an unknown point in time after their meeting, Chuy succumbed to his demonic nature for unknown reasons and changed; it took three years for Joe to get Chuy back to his normal-self.[2]

Throughout Midnight, Texas[]

Season One[]

In Pilot, after the discovery of Aubrey Hamilton's body down by the river's side during, the annual fall picnic, Chuy and his husband, Joe, received a surprise visit from Sheriff Livingston at Strong Angel Tattoo, who was hoping that between the two of them, someone could shed some light on Aubrey and her murder. Chuy explained that she'd often come into the shop with a Pinterest board, stripper trendy was her aesthetic, he said. However, there was never much conversation to be had between the two of them because Aubrey didn't approve of Chuy and Joe's lifestyle. She also didn't like the fact that Chuy was Mexican, but this did not prevent her from coming to him regularly to get her nails done.

Fiji, Joe, and Chuy joining the Midnighters

The following night, Chuy and Joe joined the fellow Midnighters in the street as the Sheriff and Tina Gomez had charged Bobo Winthrop with the murder of his fiancé, Aubrey Hamilton. As they tossed Bobo in the backseat, the Midnighters surrounded the car as Fiji Cavanaugh, the town witch, levitated the vehicle off the ground in an effort to prevent them from leaving. However, she eventually let them pass with Bobo in the back as anger was not the solution.

In Bad Moon Rising, Chuy discovers a large white feather while doing the laundry. He confronts Joe, who was leaving the shop to take Manfred to the sheriff's station. Chuy questions why Joe would go flying while knowing the possible risk of exposure. With Aubrey's murder, and Manfred's arrival, Joe was worried about the end of everything they know and love. Chuy was clueless as to what this meant but Joe had to leave, so it was a subject that they would later address.

Chuy and Joe looking at the prophesied painting

That night, as promised, Joe elaborated on his earlier comment on the end of everything. Joe explained that evil was being drawn to Midnight, both human and supernatural, and what they were experiencing was only the beginning. The more that evil took hold, the more the veil frayed, until it completely breaks. Joe then pulls down the blanket cover a large painting, which depicted an evil and chaotic war between the good and the evil. Chuy wondered how he knew any of what he was explaining. Joe tells him that the same thing occurred millennia ago, when the view tore. Chuy questioned if it was set in stone, if they were supposed to sit and wait for it to happen. According to Joe, there was a prophecy. An army would rise to battle the evil, and seal the veil forever. That army would be lead by a man that could bridge the living and the dead. Chuy instantly realized that the man Joe was referring to was Manfred.

In Sexy Beast, Chuy, Joe, Manfred, Fiji, Creek, and Lemuel gathered together in the Midnighter's room following a near attack on Manfred by an unknown creature. Chuy sat back as Joe drew an illustration of the creature at Manfred's behest. He described the woman as having multiple rows of teeth with a gaping hellhole-like mouth. She was also eating her victims. Lemuel stated that the creature was a Succubus, an ancient supernatural hunter that feeds on men that have caused pain, leaving Chuy to wonder why she came after Manfred. After more than a century of avoiding Midnight, the Midnighters began to question why one would suddenly show up, behaving so recklessly. However, Chuy and Joe knew the answer to this but remained quiet. They shared a look, both knowing that it was a result of the fraying veil.

The Midnighters discussing the Succubus

The Succubus was dropping bodies, which would bring law enforcement back to Midnight. They needed to stop her before the situation got any worse. Chuy and Joe state that the only way to stop a Succubus was with Dragon's breath, at least according to medieval folklore and Wikipedia. Fiji then offered a possible solution considering they had no way of locating a dragon. At The Inquiring Mind, Fiji created a tincture, which was in essence, a potion that would negate the Succubus' glamour. Without her beauty, she wouldn't be able to seduce men. With the Succubus on the hunt for her next victim, the Midnighters concluded that she would be headed to a late night bar called The Cartoon Saloon, considering it was the best place to find all the town's men on a Thursday night. With the potion completed, they headed to the Saloon, each Midnighter with their very own squirt bottle of tincture, needing only to get a drop of the mixture if the Succubus' mouth. As he and Joe searched the back, Chuy made note of the recent supernatural attacks, first vampires, and now a Succubus. At least Joe didn't expose himself, Chuy said. But Joe admitted to doing just that. The vampires were going to kill them. Chuy told Joe that he couldn't continue to put himself at risk, then mentioning someone or someones, who could find them because of it. Joe assured him that no one was going to find them, and in that moment, they had a more pressing concern.

The Midnighters surrounding the Succubus

Upon receiving a text from Creek, telling them that she found the Succubus outside, the Midnighters headed out into the parking lot, arriving just after she sprayed it with the tincture. They needed to get her out of site, so Lemuel picked her up and sped off to the nearby woods, where they Midnighters joined him soon thereafter. They watched as Gina turned from an attractive young blonde to an unsightly monster. After Lemuel knocks her into a tree, she hops back to her feet, then taking off into the night. However, they discovered that Connor had followed them into the woods, and was currently being hunted down. After failing to reason with Gina, as she had Connor in her grasp, Manfred burns her alive with a propane tank from the RV since it was the closest thing he could find to Dragon's breath. Back at Home Cookin', Chuy and Joe discussed the fraying veil over dinner. They both believed that the veil was affecting the supernaturals' behavior. Chuy feared that he wouldn't be able to resist the pull. Joe got closer to him, telling Chuy that they had plenty of time to be scared. For that night, they were safe, and it's all they need to worry about for the time being. Then they kissed.

Chuy looking over Joe's shoulder

In Angel Heart, Chuy returns to Midnight despite Joe warning him against it due to the impending danger. He enters the studio to find Joe painting, a quality that Chuy deeply admires. He could watch Joe paint all day. Joe is upset that Chuy returned to Midnight while knowing the dangers they face. He missed Joe too much, and he'd rather be in danger with him than safe without him. Chuy's aware that Joe outed himself to the Midnighters in order to save Creek, which he has no qualms about. Although, he does voice his concerns over Joe's pitiful plan to stay put, and wait for the arrival of the very same people trying to kill him. Chuy suggests that they come clean about everything, and ask the Midnighters for help. With the town sitting on a fraying veil to hell, Joe and Chuy wouldn't be involving them in anything that they aren't already facing or will have to face. Its been just the two of them for many centuries, it was time they reach out for help.

Joe and Chuy hiding in Olivia's closet

Joe receives a call from Manfred, telling him that someone was eyeing the shop. Joe peaks out the window above to see Bowie staring down at their front door. She was ancient and far more powerful than Joe. Chuy calms him down before making a call to enact his supposed plan, which consists of them hiding in Olivia's closet. Chuy jokes that the two of them being trapped in a closet is making his head explode. Once the coast is clear, Olivia unlocks the door, releasing them. Although, she asks if Chuy went through her items. In response, he says "not all of it". From there, Olivia, Lemuel, Joe, and Chuy await Bobo, Fiji, Manfred, and the Rev's arrival. Bobo soon arrives, with Fiji seconds behind him. She gives Chuy a hug, and not that they weren't happy to see him, but they were wondering what brought him back to town. However, he and Joe were still waiting for Manfred and Rev to show up. Wasn't long before Manfred shows up at the door, and though the Rev had still not arrived, they decide to proceed without him. They needed the Midnighters' help. There was a vengeful angel named Bowie in Midnight hunting down Joe. She was once his mentor and friend, but once he fell and left the fold, she grew angry. However, it wasn't any of these acts that called for his death, it was the fact that he fell in love with Chuy, who was a demon, much to the Midnighters' surprise.

Chuy and Joe revealing that he's a demon

Chuy and Joe met at a marketplace centuries ago, where Chuy was haggling with some pretty sketchy silk road traders. He wanted a porcelain, but he left after they asked for more than he had. However, they followed Chuy and attacked him. Joe intervened by spreading his wings, which scared the traitors off. When Joe went to help Chuy up, he saw the black blood, which is a trait commonly associated with demons. They not only beat Chuy, but they also stole his sandals. Instead of tearing them apart, Chuy let them take his sandals on the off chance that they needed them more than he did. Everything changed in that moment. Bowie always told Joe that the angels were superior, and that killing demons was doing the world a service, but Chuy disproved everything Joe had ever been told about demons. Although, Chuy was only half-demon. His mother was human. Fiji wonders if his parents were another forbidden love, much like him and Joe, but it wasn't love, he says. He and his mother were close. She taught him to control his demonic side. Their connection would keep him strong, and now his connection with Joe will keep him strong.

With the Midnighters on board to assist, Joe explains how best to handle an angel. They were tough mind readers, who were nearly immortal. While no human could kill them, demons can, though Chuy turning in order to take on Bowie was out of the question. Last time he turned, it took three years to get him back. Should he turn, they would all be in danger. Shy off killing Bowie, they still needed a way to stop her. Manfred suggests that they send her to hell, where there are demons that can take care of her. The mirror at his house during the exorcism performed by Fiji acted as a portal, allowing them to see into the other side of the veil. They can recreate the portal, and use the mirror to trap Bowie.

Chuy watching from the window

After learning that Bowie has taken all of Home Cookin' hostage, including Rev, Madonna, and Creek, in exchange for Joe, Chuy comments that he wants another century or two with Joe regardless of how selfish that may have seemed at the moment. Manfred was their best chance at stopping Bowie, so after a kiss goodbye, Joe joins Manfred in the next room. The Midnighters head out soon thereafter, leaving Chuy alone in Olivia's apartment. He watches from the window as they fail to trap Bowie in hell after she destroys the portal. All out of options, Joe is forced to take on Bowie himself, despite her being Joe's superior. Joe swoops in, knocking her out of site, though she returns angrier than before. Bowie and Joe battle in the sky, but this doesn't last long as they come crashing down into the church. All the while, Chuy watches from the window, struggling to maintain his composure. His eyes change, which is a sign of his demonic form manifesting.

Shortly after Bowie drags Joe out the church, she prepares to end him, though she has failed to account for Chuy, who joins them in their battle. Fully transformed, Chuy has undergone a number of physical changes, such as deep facial scars all along his deformed face, razor-sharp teeth, and glowing eyes. Bowie was in disbelief that Joe left her for such a hideous creature. Regardless of his lack of control, Chuy rushes towards Bowie, coming to Joe's rescue. He knocks Bowie on to her back, and hovers over her as he bites down into her throat, and rips out large chunks of flesh, which kills Bowie, resulting in a large purple explosion subsequent to her death.

Joe threatening to kill Chuy

However, Chuy was far from finished. He pushes past Joe, heading directly for Lemuel, who attempts to leech from him, but an apparent drawback to Lemuel's leeching ability is revealed as Chuy's demonic nature sickens Lem to the point of his eyes and blood blackening. Manfred throws the jar containing his ancestor's finger at Chuy, which catches his attention but proves ineffective in all other aspects. Manfred hides behind the sign of the chapel, but Chuy finds him and throws Manfred to the ground. Fortunately, before Chuy could truly do any damage, Joe gets to him, holding Chuy down while threatening to kill him should Chuy continue to pose a threat. Chuy said that their connection was strong, so Joe pleads with him to find that connection, and to bring himself back. Through sheer force of will, Chuy takes control and changes back to his human form, sobbing in Joe's arms.

The Midnighters regroup in Home Cookin', where Chuy feels terrible, but it didn't matter to him since Joe was still there with him. They prepare to head home, but Chuy first apologizes to everyone for his actions. The next day, as the veil wears heavier on Chuy's demonic side, he tells Joe that they needed to leave Midnight immediately because he couldn't continue to fight the pull much longer.

Joe and Chuy dancing at Olivia and Lemuel's wedding

In The Virgin Sacrifice, Chuy and Joe attend Olivia and Lemuel's wedding held at the chapel, just one week after the concurring of Colconnar, and the sealing of the veil. They dance outside Home Cookin' following the ceremony. With the veil's influence, and the dark pull of Midnight no longer being a concern, Chuy suspects that Manfred may have closed the veil permanently. Maybe. Or maybe he closed it for another millennium, Joe responds. A thousand years is a long ways away, Chuy says. He can live with that. He and Joe then share a kiss.

The very next morning, Chuy and Joe join the Midnighters in the street, just outside Home Cookin', where unexpected construction is underway. They are greeted by a Melanie Pratt, an employee of Albany Worldwide. They're a hospitality company and the new owners of the hotel. They're renovating, which will completely revitalize Midnight, resulting in increased, unwanted tourism for the Midnighters.

Personality[]

Chuy has a reserved, yet caring personality with most, while actively worrying about others finding out Joe's, and possibly his, secrets. Per his nature, as a half-demon, he has the potential to lose control of his demonic-self and succumb to an uncontrollable rage, threatening all that stands within his path. However, with a strong enough connection to the ones he loves, i.e. his mother and subsequently Joe, he's able to remain human and control his demonic side. This was evident during Chuy and Joe's initial meeting, where even in the face of being beaten up by traders, he did nothing in retaliation, i.e. to tear them apart, proving that while containing a demonic side, he also has a good side, proving that not all "demons" are evil.

Skills[]

Chuy possesses all the standard abilities of half-demons in Midnight, Texas, though it remains to be seen to what extent of control he has over them while expressing his human nature, such as super strength, or even that to other supernatural beings, like vampires.
