In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Monica Owusu-Breen states that she drew inspiration from the first and third books, incorporating the show with specific scenes, relationships, and villains. She goes on to elaborate that with the finale of the first season, the second season has been cued up with stories using the second book as a guide.
